Health literacy is about knowing how to foster good health and taking the steps to do so, and Laura is taking the right steps, literally and figuratively, wrote her nominator in BJC Creative Services. Laura began taking responsibility for her health in 2001 when she made three personal lifestyle changes: she quit smoking, started a kickboxing program and reduced food portion sizes. Today, she maintains her 40-pound weight loss and has added running and biking to her exercise regimen, even competing in a number of triathlons. Laura, who is highly motivated by achieving personal goals, says she wakes up every day feeling great with an energy level that enables her to maintain a busy lifestyle. For her, everything is OK in moderation but "you have to be good to counteract the bad. What's life without chocolate?" Laura supports friends who are trying to make a change, too. "I make sure that we begin each week with our workout schedule in place. Then I show up at their door ready to go. It's easier to back out on yourself than it is a friend."
