Helping Children Be and Stay Healthy
Healthy Kids Express partners with St. Louis City Public Schools, Urban League Headstart programs and local day care centers to offer important services for children to 21 years.
Healthy Kids Express through St. Louis Children's Hospital provides health care to under-served children in the St. Louis area: hearing and vision screenings, physical exams, scoliosis checks, immunizations, and tests for anemia and lead.
With the increasing number of children in St. Louis diagnosed with asthma, Healthy Kids Express implemented an Asthma Intervention Model (AIM) pilot program in St. Louis public schools. Working in cooperation with school administrators, school nurses, students and parents, health-care professionals provide intervention, educate children and their caregivers, and implement asthma action plans.
In 2006, Healthy Kids Express examined more than 8,850 children and completed 17,700 screenings:
- Vision
- Hearing
- Lead
- Anemia
- Scoliosis
- Routine physicals
- Immunizations
Of these, 3,000 screenings were failed, and these patients received appointments or were referred to physicians for follow-up care. Social workers help children who require follow-up care to apply for Medicaid if their parents do not already have medical insurance.
